Training and preparation for the Mallorca cycling high season

March and April turn Mallorca into Europe's cycling capital: 15–22 °C temperatures, long days and quiet roads. Whether you're prepping for the Mallorca 312, a Gran Fondo or just stacking kilometres, this guide gets you to peak form without burning out.

Why these months are perfect

  • Stable weather: ideal for 3–5 h rides without summer heat.
  • Low traffic: tourist crowds haven't arrived yet, roads flow smoothly.
  • Spring landscape: almond blossom and green fields (the iconic March postcard).
  • Events: Challenge Ciclista Mallorca, Mallorca 312, Trofeo Andratx-Lloseta...
  • 8-week training plan

Recommended structure to peak without overtraining:

  • Weeks 1-2 — Base: 3 rides/week, 2× 1h30 Z2 + 1× 3h long. Total 6-8h.
  • Weeks 3-4 — Volume: 4 rides/week. Add climbs (Sant Salvador, Capdepera). 8-10h.
  • Weeks 5-6 — Intensity: hill repeats (4×6' Z4) + a strength-endurance day. 10-12h.
  • Week 7 — Peak: event simulation + long ride with target profile. 12h.
  • Week 8 — Taper: 40 % volume cut, keep 1 short quality day. Arrive fresh.
  • Nutrition & hydration

  • Before: 1 g/kg carbs 2-3 h prior (oats, bread, fruit).
  • During: 60-90 g carbs/hour from hour 2. Plenty of beach bars every 20 km.
  • After: 30-min window with protein (0.3 g/kg) + carbs.
  • Hydration: 500-750 ml/h. In spring isotonic is enough; July add salt tabs.
  • Recommended kit

  • Layers: 8 °C in the morning, 22 °C midday. Short-sleeve jersey + arm warmers + wind vest.
  • Light overshoes for Sa Calobra or Lluc descents.
  • Photochromic glasses: full sun to tunnels and pine forests.
  • Tail lights always on: lots of cyclo-tourists in groups.
  • Key training routes

    1. Cap de Formentor (85 km) — iconic FTP test.

    2. Sa Calobra (110 km) — most photogenic, climb fresh.

    3. Sant Salvador from Artà (45 km) — perfect for 15-20' intervals.

    4. Randa - Cura - Sant Honorat (60 km) — three back-to-back climbs near Llucmajor.

    5. Llevant Loop (90 km) — easy spin for recovery days.
